Bone Black, also known as bone char or ivory black, is a deep, rich black pigment. This unique pigment is derived from the carbonization of animal bones, typically cattle bones.
It has been used since prehistoric times, with evidence of its use in cave paintings dating back thousands of years.
In watercolor, bone black offers a granulating effect, adding texture to washes. Unlike many synthetic blacks, Bone Black has a subtle warmth that harmonizes well with earth tones.
