Lines + one circle = ?
What could these be? It equals a nose. Simply utilize some lines and a circle. You could draw a nose easily. Before we get started, we should know what angles we are drawing and how to apply some lines so that you can draw a nose realistically.
There are two kinds of lines you need to know. First one is the lines of the golden ratio between eyes and a nose (blue ones). Other lines are the bridge lines (orange lines) which refer to the nasal bridge, the upper, bony part of the nose. What is left is the circle (a blue circle) which indicates to the tip of the nose.
As usual, we are going to divide the views into 3 sections.
Draw two golden ratio lines and the bridge lines to get started. The circle you are going to draw should be 1/3 of the golden ratio lines, and it aligns the bottom of the nose.
There is no exact ratio on the bridge lines because everyone's nasal bridges are different from each other. Same goes to the nostrils. One's are more rounded and bigger. Maybe other's are smaller and not visible. Observation is the key to draw.
The lines we required are different from the front view. We need two lines (blue lines ) which are from the inner corner of the eyes to the bottom of the nose. Also, a bridge line guides us to draw the side of the nose and of course, a circle for the tip of the nose.
The size of the nostrils is not equal due to the view of the angles. When the person is facing more on the left side, his/her left nostril appears more. The shape of the nostril is like cashew.
When you figure out the shape of the nose, there is another key element helped you achieve the realistic nose. It is SHADING. You should apply more graphite on the bottom of the nose and leave some blank areas on the side of the bridge. Keep layering up the graphite with darker grades to achieve the look.
Almost the same as the above two views, we need to draw two lines. The bridge line is optional. Let's look at the two examples below.
For the girl, because her nose is quite straight. We need a line from the inner corner of the eyes to the bottom of the nose and another line for the bridge of the nose. Draw these two lines and a circle and start outlining the nose.
For this guy, we may require one more guiding line (orange line ) to help us because of his shape of the nose. When you finished those 3 lines, you may start shaping the nose and nostril. Please be reminded that we only need to draw one nostril on this side view.
Different races have their unique appearance, but this method can apply to all. Try to practise more, and you will get the knack to draw.
