Drawing Eyes in Different Angles

Drawing Eyes in Different Angles

Drawing Eyes in Different Angles

To continue previous blog post, we are going to talk about how to draw a pair of eyes and eyebrows at different angles.

The common angles of the face would be the front view, 3/4 view, and side view. Different angles have different proportion measurement. Sometimes, the eye movement will change how we draw. Every subtle way makes a difference.

Front View

To start with, draw a straight horizontal line. The measurement between two eyes will be the measuring guide. From this, you can divide three parts equally, one part between the eyes and two parts for the eyes.

There are no any strict rules that you should start with lighter grade graphite, but it's highly recommended to do so. It's great to scale up slowly with darker grades to avoid the messiness and keep blending if necessary.

According to the image, the eyebrows of the model is blurry so the blending method would be helpful to achieve this effect. Draw some eyebrow hair and blend it. Repeat this step over and over and keep layering to the shade you love. Finally, add some details of the eyebrow hair.

3/4 view

The measuring method is almost the same as the front view, and it's also separated into 3 sections (blue lines). For this view, the face is facing more on the right side. When you measure this view, the ratio between the middle part and the right eye ( It depends on which direction the model faces) is almost the same. The left eye is nearly half of the measurement (orange line).

Note: The inner corner of the left eye is rounder than the right eye. It's pointy on the right eye because the eyes are half-opened.

When you draw the eyelashes, it is essential that you start from the bottom and slowly lift your pencil up to create the pointed line at the end. Based on this half-opened eye movement, you should draw the short upper eyelashes.

For this eyebrow, you may start with a lighter grade pencil. Draw the eyebrow hair one by one to create the texture. In the darker and dense area, use the blending technique and draw some darker lines on top of it to create a fuller eyebrow.

Side view

This one would be the easier one of all, in my opinion.

As usual, draw the guiding line. Then, draw the almost straight C-shaped across the line. After that, outline the shape of the upper and lower eyelid. Keep shading and blending to achieve a more realistic effect.

When you draw the eyebrow, you should be aware of the distance and angle between the eyebrow and the upper eyelid.

If you find any trouble to outline the shapes of eyes, you could try to trace the eyes from any photos with tracing paper. You will know more how to form the shapes by practicing more.

We have the TEMPLATE of the eyes. You can print it out here and start shading. Have fun and create more art.
