It's a ground blue potassium glass containing cobalt used in the 15th and 18th centuries. In Europe, the use of smalt as an artist's pigment was widespread certainly as early as the late sixteenth century.
Smalt is a historical blue pigment that was made from cobalt glass and used in watercolor painting. While it has since been replaced by more stable pigments, Smalt is still a popular choice for artists who want to recreate the look and feel of traditional watercolor paintings. Smalt's unique properties give it a sparkling, jewel-like quality that can add depth and richness to any painting. It is also known for its ability to produce a wide range of hues, from a pale blue-gray to a deep, dark blue.
