Red Lead is a bright red or orange solid. It has good hiding power but only fair stability. Red lead was one of the earliest pigments artificially prepared and is still in use today. 

History:

In 1504 the portcullis at Stirling Castle in Scotland was painted with red lead, as were cannons including Mons Meg
