When finely ground, epidote produces a yellowish-green. It forms during regional metamorphism of basaltic and other mafic rocks, and is commonly found in metamorphic rocks like schists and gneisses.
The name comes from the Greek word "epidosis" meaning "addition," referring to the crystal structure where one side of the prism is longer than the other.
