It's primarily composed of iron oxide and manganese oxide. The "burnt" in its name refers to the heating process it undergoes, which alters its chemical composition and deepens its color.
Burnt Umber has a deep, warm brown hue with slight reddish undertones. It's darker and cooler in tone compared to its raw counterpart, Raw Umber.
This pigment has been used since prehistoric times, found in cave paintings. It gained popularity during the Renaissance and has been a staple in artists' palettes ever since.
